Look on its broken arch, its ruined wall,
Its chambers desolate, and portals foul:
Yes, this was once Ambition’s airy hall,
The dome of Thought, the palace of the soul
Childe Harold's Pilgrimage


A piece making reference to the ruined state of Newstead when Byron inherited, and also a place for his pet crow to sit.
The Romantics love of ruins and ancient places was embodied in much of Byron's poetry and opinions
